Timber is classified as either softwood or hardwood depending on its physical makeup. The characteristics of each timber vary based on density, appearance and workability. Maintenance

Oak is a popular choice when it comes to purchasing wardrobes as it can be extremely long-lasting with little maintenance. Furniture made of oak only needs to be polished twice a year to keep it looking fresh. As a solid wood, it is also resistant to most surface stains and scratches which is great for anyone with pets and children. Alternatively, most timber softwoods are harder to maintain and easier to scratch. Their weaker build also means it’s more difficult to sand down any snags and re-varnish.

Strength

Just from the name alone, we know that hardwoods, such as oak, are very strong and durable materials, making them great when used for wardrobes. Cheaper softwood alternatives may last only a few months, whilst oak can last for years without losing its strength.

Oak offers a classic style but can be paired with other materials, such as a variety of metals, to keep your decor looking contemporary. It won’t fade over time and will always hold its warm and rustic feel. Softwoods, however, are easier in their versatility and design, meaning that often you can get the exact look that you want, rather than ‘making do.’

The biggest difference between hard and softwoods is the price. Hardwoods, such as oak, are typically a lot more expensive to buy than softwood timbers. The trees that they come from are a lot grander than softwood trees and take a lot longer to grow. Softwood timbers, on the other hand, can be made from faster-growing, less desirable trees, making them a great choice when it comes to both cost and sustainability. Ultimately, if you are able to spend a little bit more and want longer-lasting, durable and traditional looking wardrobes, then oak is a great choice. However, softer timbers are more accessible on the cost front and may be the better option if you like to regularly switch up your decor.
